Video Game Industry Layoffs Continue At Alarming Rate
Reports of massive layoffs within the video games industry are all too frequent and there appears to be no end in sight. A few years ago, investor driven conglomerate Embracer Group began acquiring almost every non-major publisher owned studio on Earth. Since then, some of its significant investors backed out causing the company to continually sell studios, closed them entirely, or repeatedly lay off staff. One such studio is a support branch of Gearbox Software called Lost Boys Interactive, whose credits include Diablo IV, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, WWE 2K, and more, which has just announced a second round of layoffs. News of massive layoffs within the video games industry has become an annual reporting item, with smaller layoffs happening almost regularly. According to videogameslayoffs.com, the number of employees laid off in 2023 reached 10,500, and in 2024, those numbers already reached 11,540, for a total of 22,040 workers in the industry who have lost their jobs in just two years.

Malicious Android Apps Use OCR To Steal Cellphone Data
Researchers discovered over 280 malicious Android apps that use optical character recognition to steal cryptocurrency wallet credentials from infected devices. The apps masquerade as official ones from banks, government services, TV streaming services, and utilities. They scour infected phones for text messages, contacts, and all stored images and secretly send them to remote servers controlled by the app developers. The apps, available from malicious sites, are distributed through phishing messages sent to targets. There is no indication that any apps were available through Google Play. SangRyol Ryu, a researcher at security firm McAfee, discovered the issue after obtaining unauthorized access to the servers that received the data stolen by the malicious apps. Ryu noted that this significant development shows threat actors are expanding their focus. People concerned they may have installed one of the malicious apps should check the McAfee post for a list of associated websites and cryptographic hashes.

Roblox Unveils AI For Generating 3D Game Worlds From Text
Roblox plans to introduce an open source generative AI tool allowing game creators to build 3D environments and objects using text prompts. The feature, which is still under development, may streamline the process of creating game worlds on popular online platform, potentially opening up more aspects of game creation to those without extensive 3D design skills. Roblox did not announce a specific launch date for the new AI tool based on what it calls a 3D foundational model. The company demonstrated a video of the tool in which a user types "create a race track," then "make the scenery a desert," and the AI model creates a corresponding model in the proper environment. The system will also reportedly let users make modifications, such as changing the time of day or swapping out entire landscapes. Roblox says the multimodal AI model will ultimately accept video and 3D prompts, not just text. Roblox reportedly uses 250 AI models, including one that monitors real time voice chat to enforce content moderation, which is not always popular with players.

Wix will block all websites of Russian users
Wix, a popular platform for creating websites and blogs, announced it will stop serving Russian users. On September 12, 2024, the company will start blocking all accounts registered to Russian residents. Sites created on the Wix platform by Russian citizens will become inaccessible to visitors. Users will lose the ability to manage their sites, edit them, renew subscriptions, and use the services of the Wix.com platform. Many website owners, especially those who use Wix for business and professional purposes, will experience problems. Wix deeply regrets the inconvenience this decision may cause its customers from Russia. The company urges users to take the necessary measures to preserve their content. Wix joins several other platforms that have previously announced Russian users' access is blocked or restricted. These decisions are related to international sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russia concerning the geopolitical situation. Medium, Squarespace, Blogger (Google), and Tilda are among them.

Apple Lost Appeal of €13 Billion European Union Fine
The Court of Justice of the European Union issued a final decision in the high profile case of Apple's tax benefits in Ireland. As a result, Apple must pay 13 billion euros in back taxes. The decision ends a long dispute over the legality of tax treaties between multinationals and European Union countries, setting a precedent for future litigation. The dispute started in 2016 when the European Commission brought charges against Apple. According to the commission, the company enjoyed preferential tax reductions in Ireland for over two decades, allowing it to reduce its tax burden significantly. The most shocking example of this practice occurred in 2014 when Apple's effective tax rate in Ireland was only 0.005%. The extremely low tax rate meant the company paid only 50 euros in taxes for every million euros of profit, a shockingly low tax rate compared to the corporation's actual income. The Court of Justice ruled that Ireland provided Apple with illegal state assistance that Ireland is obliged to collect. The decision is not subject to further appeal.

Google Antitrust Lawsuit Filed by U.S. Department Of Justice
The U.S. Department of Justice accused Google of monopolizing the online advertising market, claiming it controls all stages of selling and purchasing advertising space. Google, whose revenue relies heavily on advertising, vehemently denied the allegations, saying the government seeks to unduly interfere with a successful business while ignoring the value of the company's multibillion dollar investment in innovative technology. The lawsuit began with a detailed review of the tools that publishers use to monetize ads. The ads, which tend to appear at the top or side of the page on websites and blogs, are selected through ultra fast auctions that take place within milliseconds while the page loads. The lightning fast process, known as programmatic advertising, is a high tech marvel that matches publishers and advertisers based on factors such as subject, target audience, and price, all without active human intervention. The efficiency made programmatic advertising a cornerstone of many company revenue streams, generating billions of dollars annually.

Questionable Results When Job Applicants and Employers Both Use AI
The increasing use of AI by job applicants to prepare employment applications is changing the hiring process. It means more applications for employers to review. It also presents an opportunity for managers to use technology to identify the most suitable candidates. A Financial Times report found that, based on the employers and recruiters the outlet interviewed, about half of current job applicants use AI tools to change their resumes. This statistic not only reflects the adaptability of job seekers to new technologies but also the resilience of employers in the face of changing job application methods. Victoria McLean, chief executive of career consultancy CityCV, pointed out that AI, while helpful, cannot replicate a candidate's unique voice and story. This underscores the value of individuality in the hiring process. A survey conducted by Resume Genius found that AI generated resumes raise red flags for hundreds of U.S. hiring managers. Further, the vast majority of Fortune 500 companies use it to filter candidates. Several pending lawsuits allege companies improperly used AI when screening applicants.
