Russia Throttles YouTube Causing Mass Outage

Russian YouTube users experienced issues with the site's desktop version. Multiple outage reports were received from various sources. A Russian news source reported that Russian authorities had slowed YouTube speeds to 128 kbps. While the Russian government did not outright block access, the reduced speeds effectively banned most users. However, some YouTube users in Russia found a way to reclaim their access to the platform by using a VPN, a tool that empowers them to bypass such censorship. The tensions and conflicts between the Russian government and US social media platforms have been steadily escalating since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. YouTube and Russia have been at odds over which channels can remain active, with Russia previously urging Google to reinstate 200 pro-Kremlin channels that YouTube had removed. Mikhail Klimare, director of the nonprofit Internet Protection Society, has repeatedly criticized Russia's internet censorship and recently told The Moscow Times that the YouTube slowdown is "a clear case of blackmail."

Starlink Internet Satellites Bypass Radio Telescopes On Earth

SpaceX has found a way to provide Starlink satellite internet to 'radio telescope silence zones' in New Mexico and West Virginia, overcoming significant challenges. The company ensured that residents in these areas could access Starlink without interfering with scientific research. These radio silence zones were previously devoid of high-speed satellite internet, a situation that SpaceX's solution has rectified. The solution involves a sophisticated system that rapidly redirects the satellite signal, thereby avoiding any interference with the powerful radio telescopes used for space observations by local observatories as the company's orbiting satellites approach. Thanks to SpaceX's ingenious solution, the radio silence zone in Socorro, New Mexico, home to the NRAO's Very Large Array telescope, now enjoys the benefits of fast and reliable Starlink satellite Internet. This development has significantly improved residents' connectivity and brought hope and positivity, especially for the Alamo Navajo Indian tribe, who can now access the internet with unprecedented speed and reliability, opening up a world of possibilities.

Law Firm Prepares For Intel Class Action Lawsuit

Law firm Abington Cole and Ellery is investigating a potential class action lawsuit against Intel due to instability issues with its 13th and 14th Generation CPUs. Intel has acknowledged the problem, stating that the high operating voltage caused by a microcode algorithm is leading to instability. Although Intel promises a patch, it will not prevent the damage the affected chips have already suffered. Intel has proposed replacing the damaged CPUs, which could weaken the lawsuit's basis if effectively executed. However, the diverse user experiences with Intel's RMA service, ranging from smooth replacements to delays and complications, are pivotal in determining the outcome of this situation. Intel says it will support all affected customers, including those with tray processors, but advises contacting pre-installed system vendors. Users with affected Intel CPUs must reduce the voltage and clock speed until the microcode update is released, a less than ideal solution for high end processors.

Micron Begins Producing Fastest G9 3D NAND TLC Memory

Micron's partners can now create some of the fastest SSDs in the world, thanks to the start of mass production of new 276-layer 3D NAND TLC memory chips. These chips, produced with advanced manufacturing technologies, are a testament to Micron's commitment to quality and innovation. Internal tests conducted by Micron have shown that the new memory chips can achieve speeds of 3.6 Gbps. Compared to competitors' products, they offer read and write speeds that are 88% and 99% faster. The dimensions of the memory chips are 11.5 x 13.5 mm, which is 28% smaller than competitors' current solutions. The Micron 2650, the first SSD to incorporate the new G9 3D NAND TLC memory, is a game-changer in the industry. Early results show a staggering 38% improvement in the PCMark 10 benchmark compared to the competition. Furthermore, there is a maximum improvement in sequential read and write performance of 70% and 103%, with an 85% enhancement in random writes. These significant performance improvements will surely excite our partners and customers, who are eager to experience the power of the Micron 2650 SSD.

NASA Used Lasers To Transmit 4K Video To And From ISS

NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, USA, recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing laser communication in space. They transmitted 4K streaming video from an aircraft to the International Space Station (ISS) and back, paving the way for exciting future possibilities. This achievement brings us closer to the potential of live video broadcasts from the Moon during the upcoming Artemis mission. Traditionally, NASA has relied on radio signals for data transmission and communication with astronauts in space. However, using laser communications and employing infrared light offers a considerable speed advantage, with data transmission rates up to an impressive 100 times faster. Notably, the experiment leveraged a new High-Rate Delay-Tolerant Networking (HDTN) system developed at NASA's Glenn Research Center. This system effectively allowed the signal to pass through the cloud layer more efficiently, contributing to the demonstration's overall success.

Samsung Expected To Start Shipping HBM3E High Bandwidth Memory This Fiscal Quarter

Samsung Electronics is on the brink of a significant milestone - the commencement of high volume shipments of validated HBM3E high bandwidth memory. While this may temporarily limit the supply of DDR5 and other memory chips, it also heralds a new era of high performance memory technology. Despite a sluggish demand for consumer electronics in the second quarter of 2024, with only a slight uptick in July, Samsung's DRAM prices demonstrated remarkable resilience, surging by 10% to 15% in July. While the storage module manufacturer faced challenges in absorbing less inventory than planned, the upcoming launch of new products in the peak season of the second half of 2024 presents a promising opportunity. Delays in Samsung's HBM verification, caused by heat dissipation issues, have given its main competitors, SK Hynix and Micron Technology, a head start. However, Samsung has notified memory module manufacturers that they will soon obtain HBM3E validation this fiscal quarter, and high volume shipments will follow. This notification suggests that Samsung is gearing up to enter the market with its HBM3E high bandwidth memory, which could potentially disrupt the current market dynamics and pose challenges for its competitors.
