Intel Issues Statement Concerning 13th And 14th Gen Core Instability
Long term reliability issues continue to plague Intel's 13th and 14th Gen Core desktop processors based on the 'Raptor Lake' microarchitecture. Users have reported that their processors become unstable when handling heavy processing workloads, such as gaming, even those with lower levels of performance tuning or overclocking. Intel had previously identified many of these stability issues as being caused by faulty CPU core frequency boosting algorithms, which are responsible for adjusting the processor's speed based on the workload. These issues were resolved through updates to the processor microcode, a low level software that controls the processor. The motherboard and pre-installed manufacturers distributed the updated microcode as UEFI firmware updates, which are software that controls the essential functions of the motherboard. Now, the company has released new conclusions about what could be causing these problems. In a statement Intel posted on its website yesterday, the company says it has been investigating processors returned to it by users under warranty claims, which it has been replacing under the terms of its warranty. Faulty microcode in processors has caused processors to run at excessive voltages in the core, leading to structural degradation over time. Intel determined the high operating voltage is causing instability issues in some 13th/14th Gen desktop processors. The instability is due to the irreversible physical degradation of the chip. The warranty covers the chips.

U.S. Federal Trade Commission Issues Warning About Warranties
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken decisive action against three prominent PC companies, ASRock, Zotac, and Gigabyte, for their illegal warranty practices. "Consumers have the right to repair their products, and companies should not make it difficult by putting up illegal barriers," said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. He added, "Manufacturers who try to circumvent the law will face the serious consequences of fines and further legal action." The FTC's investigation revealed that these PC companies have been including misleading warranty clauses that claim consumers will void their warranties if they open or modify their devices. However, the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits such practices unless the company can prove that the consumer's actions directly caused the need for repair. The FTC has ordered companies to end these illegal warranty practices immediately and to proactively inform consumers of their right to repair their devices without voiding the warranty. All three manufacturers have 30 days to update their promotional and warranty information on their websites to indicate the updated information. Failure to comply with the FTC's guidelines could lead to significant fines and further legal action.

CableMod Recalled Over 25 Thousand Connectors Due To Fire Hazard
CableMod has initiated a large scale recall of its products, specifically the special L-shaped 12VHPWR power adapters designed to prevent new generation graphics cards from overheating the power connector. However, these connectors have not been able to perform as intended, leading to numerous incidents. In December 2023, CableMod recalled both V1.0 and V1.1 12VHPWR 90 degree adapters and advised consumers to stop using them due to reported cases of graphics cards catching fire. In response to these issues, the company has recalled 25,300 adapters to prevent further damage and lawsuits. Even though the recall involved many adapters, the company incurred a relatively small loss of $74,000. About 272 customers contacted CableMod after experiencing issues with the connectors. CableMod assures users the company is addressing all customer concerns, suggesting that even more dissatisfied customers may not have reported problems to the company.

United States Sanctions Deepcool For Supporting Russian War Effort
The United States Department of State has confirmed the imposition of sanctions on Beijing DeepCool Industries, a manufacturer of PC cooling solutions, cases, and power supplies. The company allegedly supplied Russian companies with over $1 million dollars worth of Common High Priority (CHPL) items that can assist Russia's war efforts against Ukraine. DeepCool has reportedly sold goods to Aktsionernoe Obshchestvo Taskom, a freight transportation company, and OOO Novyi Ai Ti Project, which manufactures computers, memory devices, and information security equipment supporting Russia's wartime efforts. The sanctions will prohibit all US firms from conducting business with Beijing DeepCool Industries, potentially forcing the US based operations of DeepCool to cease all activities. It could lead to American retailers discontinuing DeepCool products and prevent DeepCool from providing after sales support to its existing customers.
